Civil War family will be Voice from the Stone

Veterans Day, in November, reminds citizens of all veterans who have served or are serving.

The Veterans Remembrance Committee has set a date for the Veterans Day Program, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. on the Courthouse lawn at the Plaza.

Bruce “Bo” Johnstone, docent director of Union County Historical Society, will be the Master of Ceremonies.  Pavers purchased during the year will be dedicated.

This year’s honoree for Voice from the Stone will be Civil War veterans Levi and Samuel Millington who died at Shiloh on April 6, 1862. Their father, Otis, was in the same unit and saw their deaths.

The Union County Veterans Monument and Plaza was first dedicated on Armed Forces Day, May 19, 2007.

There is still time to purchase pavers for this year’s ceremony. There is also still room for families or organizations to purchase pavers for the walkway to the monument.

The purchase deadline for this year’s ceremony is Oct. 17, and personal or business tax deductible contributions can be made anytime throughout the year for the perpetuity of the plaza. Donations can also be made to the Veterans Remembrance Fund, c/o Union County Foundation.

Pavers may be purchased at the Union County Foundation, 500 W. Fourth St., or at www.unioncountyfoundation.org.

Currently, there are more than 2,200 veteran pavers installed in the plaza and more than 6,300 published veteran records on the website, which may be accessed at www.ucvetmemorial.org.

The Veterans Remembrance Committee goal is to make sure all Union County veterans are listed and honored at the database and plaza. The Plaza belongs to everyone in the county for the purpose of honoring and giving thanks to all area veterans, past and present, who served during conflict or peace on home soil or overseas.
