Marysville woman arrested for school threat
The Marysville School District was notified Thursday evening of a reported threat involving one of its schools and the Marysville Police Department (MPD) has arrested a suspect.
According to a press release from MPD, Colleen May, 37, of Marysville was taken into custody at approximately 11:30 a.m. today, on a charge of making terroristic threats, a felony of the third degree.
On Thursday at approximately 8:23 p.m., MPD received a report from the Union County Clerk of Courts Office of a suspicious email sent to their office. The email made generalized statements about threats to a local school, although no particular building was identified. Officers were able to locate a possible address for the alleged sender and responded to a home on the south side of Marysville to follow up. While on scene at the address, officers were notified of a second email with similar statements that had been received by Marysville schools. Officers were able to determine both emails were sent from the same account. MPD remained in constant contact with Marysville schools and assisted them, as needed, as they followed their established safety and security protocols related to incidents such as this.
Through the course of the investigation, officers were able to identify a suspect, identified as May. Detectives from MPD executed a search warrant at the home. During a subsequent interview with May, she confessed to sending the emails and used a student’s information as part of an attempt to hide her identity and cover up additional alleged crimes. May was then arrested and transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail.
District administrators immediately followed established safety and security protocols and worked in close coordination with MPD. Out of an abundance of caution, there was an increased police presence on campus, according to information from the schools.
The case remains under investigation by the Marysville Police Division and additional charges may be forthcoming. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
